Des Moines Menace get rare MLS test with Sporting KC

DES MOINES, Iowa — While the World Cup has much of the soccer world buzzing, the Des Moines Menace got a World Cup break opportunity of their own.

Earlier this month, the Menace traveled to Kansas City after being invited by Sporting Kansas City to take part in a series of closed-door training matches against Sporting KC’s First Team. Earlier in June, Sporting KC’s First Team had scrimmaged against Harry Kane and the English National team, who are based in KC for the World Cup.

The matches were held at Compass Minerals National Performance Center, Sporting KC’s official training facility.

For the Menace, a pre-professional club based in Des Moines, the opportunity offered something few clubs at that level get: a chance to measure themselves directly against MLS competition.

The Menace said the experience gave players a firsthand look at the speed, intensity, and professionalism required at the next level. The club’s roster includes elite local talent along with players from top college programs across the country and around the world, many of whom are hoping to continue their careers professionally.

“Kansas City’s invitation speaks volumes about the reputation the Des Moines Menace have built over the years,” Menace General Manager Kyle Davy said in a release. “Our mission has always been to provide elite playing opportunities and developmental experiences for our athletes. To be invited into an MLS environment and compete against Sporting KC’s First Team is an incredible opportunity for our players and a testament to the quality of talent that continues to come through Des Moines.”

Menace Head Coach Zac Newton said the matches were the kind of experience that can help push players forward.

“These are the types of experiences that accelerate development,” Newton said. “Our players were challenged every minute they were on the field. They had the opportunity to compete against professional players, see the level that’s required to succeed, and measure themselves against some of the best talent in the country. That’s something they’ll carry with them long after this season wraps up.”

The timing also gives the Menace a jolt heading into a major league match at home.

Des Moines welcomes first-place division rival Peoria City to Mediacom Stadium on Saturday. The Menace are hoping the MLS-level test in Kansas City helps sharpen them for a chance to keep three points at home.
