Extreme heat to impact this year’s John Deere Classic

The John Deere Classic is one of the biggest events of the year in the Quad Cities, bringing essential tourism income to local businesses, restaurants and hotels. While it’s usually hot during the tournament that takes place July 4th weekend, this year’s patrons and golfers will feel extreme heat.

High temperatures are expected to be in the 90s, with feels-like temperatures possibly hitting triple digits. The heat and humidity will be tough to battle, but with all the events the tournament hosts, it’s a sure thing people will try their best. From big country concerts, a kids’ zone, delicious food, America’s 250th birthday celebration and, of course, the golf, the John Deere Classic gives many a reason to head out to TPC Deere Run.

To have a fun experience, preparation for the heat starts at home. “One of the best things they can do is wear breathable, lightweight clothing,” said Dr. Michael Barr, an ER physician at UnityPoint Health – Trinity. “The use of a cooling towel will be ideal, too.”

Attending the John Deere Classic usually means a lot of walking. This year, fans will have to pay attention to how they’re dealing with the heat. “It’s a hilly long course, and if you feel like you’re getting dehydrated and overheated, seek shade, rest and adequately hydrate, I’d say,” said Barr.

To help the fans, the John Deere Classic adjusted what they will allow to be brought to the course. “This year they’re allowing two bottles of water. There are numerous filling stations for water bottles. They do have cooling centers too which people can seek out,” said Barr.

Plenty of events will keep the course busy. Wednesday features the kids’ day and a pro-am competition. Thursday kicks off the tournament. Friday hosts the fold-the-flag celebration and the cut for the weekend field of players. Carrie Underwood will perform after the round on Saturday. Sunday will crown a new champion and celebrate the end of the tournament with a performance from Old Dominion.
