America at 250: Honoring the Women Who Expanded American Democracy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (DC Bureau) — As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, a new monument on the National Mall aims to ensure the women who expanded American democracy are no longer left out of the nation’s story.

The Women’s Suffrage National Monument will become the first memorial on the National Mall dedicated solely to the movement that secured women the right to vote. Supporters say it’s an opportunity to recognize the generations of trailblazing women who fought to make the country’s founding promise of liberty and equality more inclusive.

Washington Correspondent Raquel Martin spoke with the leaders behind the project about why they believe America’s “front yard” should reflect not only the nation’s founders, but the women who spent decades pushing the country closer to a more perfect union.
