Arrest made after shots-fired incident at Rock Island tavern

A man was arrested following a shots-fired incident at a Rock Island tavern.

According to a release from the Rock Island Police Department, officers were dispatched to Deanna’s Place tavern Saturday, July 4 at approximately 12:12 a.m. for reports of shots being fired. Officers found evidence of shots being fired at two different locations on the property and an occupied vehicle struck by gunfire. A person in the vehicle suffered minor injuries from shattering glass. No other injuries were reported.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., officers were dispatched to a report of shots being fired in the 1200 block of 9th St. and found a stolen vehicle that had sustained damage from gunfire, hit a parked vehicle and was abandoned. Officers located Damarkus Echols, 31, in the area and identified him as the suspect from the earlier shooting incident. Echols was taken into custody and charged with aggravated discharge of a firearm and possession of a controlled substance. He was transported to the Rock Island County Jail pending official charges.

As a result of the incident at Deanna’s Place and in the interest of public safety, Rock Island mayor Ashley Harris, in his capacity as the city’s liquor commissioner, enacted an emergency closing order of the tavern pending a liquor commission hearing.
