Buildings collapse overnight in Muscatine

Two of the buildings evacuated in Muscatine late last year collapsed late Friday during heavy rainfall.

The collapses near the intersection of 2nd and Sycamore were captured on video and shared on social media by nearby businesses The Coffee Belt and The Merrill Soap Company.

Mayor Brad Bark visited the scene Saturday morning and used a drone to assess the scene and share the footage with structural engineers.

“As you can see behind us, we had two structures collapse last night — 201 and 203 — shortly before midnight,” Bark said. “We’re evaluating the situation right now. We’ve been in contact with our structural engineer to look at what are the next steps starting first thing next week.”

When Our Quad Cities News arrived around 8:30 a.m., we saw bricks spread across a closed street and a significant pile of materials where the buildings once stood. A couple of windows on one of the buildings remained intact.

Customers at The Coffee Belt shared stories of being awakened by the sound of the collapse — or learning about it from the shop’s social media post.

At some point over the next half hour after we arrived, an alarm started sounding from inside the rubble. It was unclear what that alarm signified, but city officials were investigating.
