Illinois law expands assistance for homeless students

A new law in Illinois expands emergency assistance for students who are homeless.

House Bill 4137 amends the Education for Homeless Children Act to allow school district to provide for an extended motel stay for students who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. Previously, districts could only provide help with things like rent, mortgages or utilities. Supporters say the flexibility gives families a safe place to stay while they are trying to find permanent housing.

The law took effect immediately.
