Muscatine’s Musser Library, HNI Community Center, close temporarily for repairs
By Linda Cook,
7 hours agoThe Musser Public Library and HNI Community Center will be closed Monday through Wednesday, Aug. 24–26, to allow contractors to replace three leaking roof sections and install a new HVAC unit. The library will reopen Thursday, Aug. 27, a news release says.
During the closure, the book drop will be locked and unavailable. No fines or fees will be charged for any materials that come due while the building is closed. Patrons who need materials beforehand are encouraged to stop in before Aug. 24.
Alley closures
In addition to the building closure:
Monday, Aug. 24: Number 1 Alley will be closed from Walnut Street to Mulberry Avenue for roof‑replacement preparation.
Aug. 25–Sept. 25: The alley will be closed from Walnut Street to the library parking lot drive from 6 a.m.–7 p.m. Contractors will reopen the alley on rain days or when work does not require access.
Project details
Roof replacement: Top Choice Construction and Roofing was awarded the $148,653.90 contract on July 7, 2026. Insurance will cover $34,541.00 for storm‑damage repairs to one roof section. The remaining $114,112.90 will come from the Building and Grounds Deferred Maintenance Fund.
HVAC replacement: Crawford Company was awarded the $245,852.00 contract on April 7, 2026, to replace the library’s large rooftop heating and cooling unit. The current system is failing and parts are no longer available. This unit provides climate control for roughly two‑thirds of the building. Funding will come from the Building and Grounds Equipment Repair Fund.
