Lee County Sheriff’s Office investigating Flock camera damage
By Sharon Wren,
1 days agoThe Lee County Sheriff's Office is investigating three damaged Flock License Plate Readers (LPRs) near I-39 in eastern Lee County, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.
Over the last three weeks, individuals have cut the poles containing these LPRs and repairing and replacing the cameras will cost hundreds of dollars. “While the use of LPRs has become somewhat controversial, the application of LPRs doesn’t negate their legitimate investigative value,” the release said.
“LPRs have been in use by law enforcement for decades. The systems today are highly accurate and provide objective evidence and investigative leads that have been proven to help solve crimes. When a vehicle linked to a wanted person, a stolen car or a missing-person case passes a camera, officers can receive an alert. LPRs function as a force multiplier by giving deputies investigative leads that would otherwise require substantially more personnel and time.”
The charge of criminal damage to government supported property for these LPRs is a Class 3 Felony that is punishable by 2 to 5 years in the Department of Corrections.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office asks the public to report any suspicious activity around LPRs and identify anyone responsible for this damage. Anyone with information on this investigation should contact Lee County Sheriff’s Department (815) 284-6631 or Ogle/Lee Crimestoppers at 1-888-Caught-U.
