Man injured in reported explosion in rural Calamus

A man is undergoing treatment at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a report of an explosion in rural Calamus yesterday.

A news release from the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office says the Clinton County Communications Center received a 911 call reporting an explosion at a residence in the 2800 block of 160th Avenue in rural Calamus on August 31 at about 2:13 p.m. Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies, Calamus Fire Department and Wheatland Ambulance were dispatched in response.

Calamus First Responders arrived on scene and found multiple structures and vehicles on fire. A man was found near the residence with severe burns. The man was treated by Wheatland Ambulance and transported by AirCare 4 air ambulance to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for further treatment. A member of the Calamus Fire Department developed heat-related symptoms while fighting the fire and was taken to Genesis Hospital in DeWitt by ground ambulance.

The man’s identity and condition are being withheld at this time and the incident is still under investigation by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office and the Iowa State Fire Marshal Division. Calamus First Responders, Calamus Fire Department, Wheatland Ambulance, Wheatland Fire Department, DeWitt Ambulance, Clinton County Emergency Management, Iowa State Fire Marshal Division, Iowa State Patrol and AirCare 4 assisted at the scene.
