MLK Center hosts Soul of the City 2026

15 hours agoThe Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center presents Soul of the City 2026, a free, family-friendly celebration of community, culture and connection on Saturday, September 5th from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. at Franklin Field, 1251-9th Street in Rock Island.
The festivities start with the Soul of the City Parade at 10 a.m. The parade starts at Frances Willard Elementary School, 25th Avenue and 9th Street, and heads north on 9th Street before ending at Franklin Field.
Highlights for the day include:
- Event Host: Award-winning Rock Island educator and activist Rita Jett
- Funktastic Five
- MLK’s Boxing Club and Dynamic Status Gems Dance Team
- Six of the QC’s most sought after DJs
- Kidz Zone with activities for all ages
- West End Rib Festival & Contest
There’s plenty for guests to enjoy, including:
- Live music and entertainment
- Food trucks and local vendors
- Kids’ games and activities
- Community resource booths
- And much more!

7-Eleven clerk revives three overdosed customers
A 7-Eleven clerk in Denver has resuscitated three customers with Narcan in the past few months, and one of the rescues was witnessed by this reporter. Arica Crowley works in the 7-Eleven across from Quebec Square. She said she didn’t sign up to save lives when she applied at the retailer but doesn’t mind the extra duty. She said what disappoints her most is that many people, when revived, become angry and storm off without accepting further help. Coming out of the high with Narcan has been described as a hellacious experience.

The abduction of 2-year-old Samantha Michelle Kibalo from Suffern, New York by her mother in 2001
Samantha Michelle Kibalo has been missing from Suffern, New York (Rockland County), since February 3, 2001, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Her photo above (right) is an age-progressed likeness of how she might have looked at 25, though she would now be 27.

Sweep of homeless camp ruined Sunken Gardens Park neighborhood, resident says
The City of Denver caused the area near Sunken Gardens Park to become overrun with homeless people using drugs after crews dismantled a 130-person encampment on 8th Avenue, down the street from the park, according to a mother in the neighborhood.
