Conductor Maurice Cohn will lead the Knox-Galesburg Symphony in the opening concert of its 75th season. "A Little Night Music" will include Mozart, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Gabriela Ortiz.
Galesburg native Maurice Cohn, currently music director of the West Virginia Symphony, returns home to conduct.

The featured work for the evening will be Rimsky-Korsakov’s "Scheherazade," the symphonic suite inspired by the story of a young woman who manages to save her own life by her skillful weaving of spellbinding stories from the legendary collection of tales known as "One Thousand and One Nights" (or “Arabian Nights.”).

The program will also include the first movement of Mozart’s "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," followed by "Antrópolis" written in 2019 by Mexican composer Gabriela Ortiz. This piece is based on the composer’s personal memories of her visits to Mexico City’s legendary dance halls and nightclubs (“antró”) with its high-energy urban music and nightlife.

The concert will be at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Orpheum Theatre, 57 S. Kellogg St., Galesburg. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Tickets, from $30-$35, are available here or by calling the Orpheum Theatre’s box office Tuesday through Friday between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., or just before the concert.

The Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1951, is celebrating its 75th season.
