Sprint Invaders heat up West Liberty Raceway
By Linda Cook,
11 hours agoSaturday was a wild night of racing at West Liberty Raceway. The program was highlighted by the winged warriors of the Sprint Invaders.
The Sprint Invaders feature started out with three cautions in the first two laps. The first yellow involved three cars, with the second collecting five race cars. The third caution was for second place Tasker Phillips who had a flat tire. Tasker had the tire replaced and rejoined the field at the tail.
Meanwhile, Sawyer Phillips was putting a whooping on the field. Sawyer built up a seven-second lead over Tyler Lee, Dustin Selvage, and Dustin Clark. Tasker Phillips had been marching his way back to the front and reached fifth when the final caution flag of the main was shown.
On the restart, Tasker passed Clark and Selvage. Tasker also passed Lee in the final laps for second, but had nothing for his brother.
Sawyer Phillips claimed his first West Liberty win, with Tasker taking second. Lee held on for third, ahead of Selvage and Clark.
Jace Eckrich dominated the West Liberty Auto Parts - IMCA Modified feature. Eckrich led all fifteen laps flag-to-flag. Kurt Kile and Chris Zogg had a back and forth tussle for the second spot. Zogg took the position late in the race. Kile finished third followed by Blaine Bryant and Mitch Way.
A tough field of Aupp Automotive- IMCA SportMods were on hand Saturday. Their feature started with Curtis VanDerWal jumping out to a big lead. Halfway through the main the track lights went out in turns 1 & 2. On the restart, fifth row starter Jarrett Franzen took a shot at the leader but could not complete the pass. Another yellow would give Franzen a second chance. This time he would not fail.
Franzen led the final five laps to take the win. VanDerWal took second over Tim Plummer. Bryson Eckrich finished fourth with Rusty DeShaw fifth.
Street Stocks and Stock Cars battled head-to-head in the Brothers Towing/Midtown Towing/DeVore Towing – Street Stock main. David Brandies led early, but Scotty Pratt was able to track his down and take the victory. Brandies was second with Johnny Spaw third. Jesse Owen and Cary Brown rounded out the top five.
Austin Honts put his ride in victory lane in Midwest Jalopies action. Michael Hulsing finished second. Tanner Gerrard, Jeff Blunt, and Travis Heier finished third through fifth in that order.
SR Promotions is back in action next Saturday, September 12, with the MVVRCA Hawkeye Futurity at Davenport Speedway. The event features vintage race cars. There will also be Powder Puff and Mechanic Races for the Davenport weekly stock car classes.
Next up for West Liberty Raceway is the Liberty 100 on October 23-24. The Liberty 100 will feature the MLRA Late Models.
