More than half a million people on Medicaid in Illinois could lose their health coverage.

The state mailed thousands of letters warning Medicaid enrollees about coverage changes because of a new tax law (H.R. 1) signed by President Trump. The new law cuts billions of dollars from the federal Medicaid program over the next decade. About 700,000 people who joined Medicaid since Illinois expanded eligibility under the Affordable Care Act could lose their coverage next year. Mandatory six-month renewal checks begin January 1. They have to prove their eligibility every six months.

Federal rules cut off Medicaid eligibility for thousands of noncitizens lawfully-present in Illinois. Initial eligibility restrictions begin October 1.
