The incident unfolded at the AMC Burbank 16 at approximately 5:30 p.m. on Sept. 15. The man, identified by the Burbank Police Department as 34-year-old Los Angeles resident Matthew Ware, is said to have pepper-sprayed a person who was using their cell phone “about 40 minutes into the movie,” according to a witness, who said he heard a “hissing sound” of an aerosol spray. Moments later, a person could be heard screaming that they were pepper-sprayed, and Ware was reportedly seen fleeing the theater right after. The witness who spoke to KTLA said he called police, who found Ware in the theater lobby and arrested him. He was booked into the Burbank Jail for misdemeanor battery, authorities said. Two other people in the theater had to be treated at a hospital due to irritation from the pepper spray. Many social media accounts were quick to post about the incident, including Save Your Cinema, an initiative dedicated to preserving independent cinemas; Save Your Cinema’s post indicated that “an entire row of moviegoers” were pepper-sprayed “because one person was using their cell phone during the movie.” That report was not confirmed; however, people in the comments of the post, which racked up more than 35,000 likes in 17 hours, seemed to agree with Ware when it came to pepper-spraying the allegedly disruptive patron. “But I have to know. Did he do it cinematically? Like did he stand up slow and ominously and turn to them and say. ‘I see that you’re on your phone in the movies!? Well I hope you like your popcorn and your experience extra spicy !!!!’ (sprays with reckless abandon laughing manically),” one user said. “The Batman statue down the stairs needs to be replaced with a statue of this hero,” another chimed. Instead of presenting links, as Google had been doing for many years, it gave me an AI-generated answer. The artificial intelligence agent cited a number, then complicated that reply, noting that quality and balance of time could matter more than the number of hours, and that “too much” time could depend on a teenager’s sleep, exercise, school demands and mood.I tried another search: Should I take a daily aspirin? This time the AI answer presented me with medical information, warned about risks and offered more tailored guidance if I provided my age and medical history.These were good replies. What interested me was that they were different kinds of replies.Debate about AI answers has focused on accuracy: Did the system get the answer right? That matters, but accuracy is only one test. Each kind of answer requires a user to judge something different.I find it useful to sort AI answers into an “answer typography” of four broad types: factual, interpretive, constructive and strategic. A factual claim can often be checked against a source. An interpretation can be accurate and still reflect choices about which evidence matters. A construction can be well reasoned and still be wrong for the person receiving it. A beautifully written strategic document may not be true. Yet AI presents all four types of answers in much the same fluent, authoritative form; the differences are easy to miss.I’m <a href="https://library.virginia.edu/staff/yrq5ns" rel="nofollow">university librarian and dean of libraries</a> at the University of Virginia who leads national efforts to develop AI competencies for library professionals, and I consult widely on <a href="https://scholar.google.com/citations?hl=en&amp;user=Y0tTqNYAAAAJ&amp;view_op=list_works&amp;sortby=pubdate" rel="nofollow">AI literacy</a>. I first proposed the typography in the <a href="https://doi.org/10.1016/j.acalib.2025.103186" rel="nofollow">Journal of Academic Librarianship</a>.The four categories are not airtight boxes. A response from an AI agent can reflect several types. That said, I describe each type of answer below, and offer guidance for deciding whether a reply is ready to use or needs more investigation.<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Which answer is Google giving you?</h2>A factual answer makes a claim that can, in principle, be checked against evidence. When was the University of Virginia founded? What is the chemical symbol for gold?To determine whether a factual answer is robust enough for you to use, verify the claim against an appropriate source. If the answer cites a source, follow that link instead of simply treating the answer itself as proof.An interpretive reply is built on evidence, but there is not a single takeaway. How much screen time is too much for a teenager? Does remote work raise productivity? The answer depends on what evidence is included, what is left out and how disagreement is understood.Google’s initial answer to my screen-time question indicated that two hours was a limit for teenagers. Then it noted that pediatric guidance puts more weight on the quality and context of screen use than on simple hours. The American Academy of Pediatrics says there is <a href="https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/media-and-children/center-of-excellence-on-social-media-and-youth-mental-health/qa-portal/qa-portal-library/qa-portal-library-questions/screen-time-for-teenagers/" rel="nofollow">no exact recommended amount for teens</a> and emphasizes the kind of screen use and what activities it might be displacing. A question that looked numerical turned out to require interpretation.To assess interpretive answers, do more than check facts. Ask yourself what evidence the system emphasized, what it left out and whether another defensible interpretation exists. A useful follow-up question to present to the search engine is: “What is the strongest evidence for a different conclusion?”Constructive answers are made rather than discovered. Ask AI to draft a cover letter, write a eulogy, suggest a lesson plan or reorganize a paragraph – there is no single correct result.You can judge the response by considering purpose, audience and voice. A eulogy can be grammatically perfect and still sound nothing like the person delivering it, or it may land flat on family members hearing it. It may not capture the deceased person well, either. Consider these kinds of effects as you read.Strategic questions ask what to do. Should I take a daily aspirin? Should I buy the house? The answers combine information with judgment about goals, risks, trade-offs and personal circumstances.My aspirin search shows why context matters. Google warned about risks, told me to consult a medical professional and offered more tailored information if I provided my age, cardiovascular history and risk of bleeding. That caution matches the <a href="https://www.uspreventiveservicestaskforce.org/uspstf/recommendation/aspirin-to-prevent-cardiovascular-disease-preventive-medication" rel="nofollow">U.S. Preventive Services Task Force guidance</a>. It says the decision to start low-dose aspirin for prevention of heart attacks and strokes should be individualized and weigh cardiovascular benefit against bleeding risk.For strategic answers, ask what the system would need to know before its advice could reasonably apply to you individually. Consider the stakes, the alternatives and whether a qualified person should be involved. For the aspirin question, a useful follow-up would be: “What details about my age, medical history or bleeding risk could change this advice? What should I discuss with my doctor before deciding?” The final judgment remains yours because you are the person who has to live with the outcome.<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The first question after an answer</h2>My questions began as ordinary Google searches. I did not open a chatbot. The AI-generated responses simply arrived, and links were appended.The responses were useful. Google added context, acknowledged complications and offered tailored guidance if I supplied additional information. Within each response, though, the type of answer could change. Reporting what a medical guideline says is different from deciding how it applies to a particular person. A fluent response can move between those types of answers without a noticeable change in voice.As a user, try to recognize what kind of intellectual work the AI agent did for a response you receive. Consider whether the interpretation is persuasive or the advice fits your circumstances.Before asking whether an AI answer is right, ask a more basic question: What kind of answer is this? For every squeal, there was a laugh.All Kids Bike, a program within a nonprofit organization, has brought a learn-to-ride curriculum into nearly 2,000 U.S. elementary schools. They've made <a href="https://apnews.com/article/bike-ride-to-school-children-families-9651e537894865aff2193bb45a5ce34e" rel="nofollow">bike-riding</a> part of physical education for children who might otherwise have to wait for an adult or older sibling to teach them — or whose neighborhood and socioeconomic status might stop them from getting the chance.When schools apply for the program, All Kids Bike can pair them with donors that fund the costs. In Rancho Cucamonga, the city provided $45,000 to gift the equipment and the curriculum to Terra Vista and four other schools.The eight-lesson curriculum gradually moves children from simply walking with and getting comfortable on a properly fitted bike to balancing with both feet off the ground. Then, adults add pedals and the students progress to full-fledged cycling.<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Riding bikes teaches kids confidence</h2>The activity is perfect for kindergarten physical education classes, says Drew Raney, a P.E. teacher in Wasco, California. For schools’ youngest students, gym class focuses on exploring movement, learning to share space and equipment, following directions and having fun. The learning can happen with rainbow parachutes, scooter boards, Hippity Hops — and now, bicycles.For Raney, who teaches the All Kids Bike program at his school, some of his favorite moments come when students begin lifting their feet and riding in stop-and-go spurts.“Once you see students start to kind of glide around, that’s when you can start to see that confidence shoot up because they’re taking those first steps and they’re putting themselves out of their comfort zone,” he said.In Seattle, district physical education manager Lori Dunn sees learning to ride a bike as more than simply mastering a recreational skill. The process requires <a href="https://apnews.com/article/mobility-exercises-health-fitness-aging-c0403522aed1c7a589c6972549a4584e" rel="nofollow">balance</a>, core stability, sequencing and body awareness, she said, with each step building on the one before it. She compares it to typing or keyboarding: Once children learn the skill, it's easier to pick it up later, with practice.The process can also teach children how to handle frustration as they wobble or fall.Hopefully, bike riding will someday be “just like basketball or dodgeball or whatever <a href="https://apnews.com/article/poll-youth-sports-parents-cost-1bb4f4f02f46bf728b6748a485e11b96" rel="nofollow">other sport</a> there is,” becoming such a basic skill that it is simply part of PE, said Lisa Weyer, executive director of the Strider Education Foundation, which operates All Kids Bike.<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Biking PE gives kids access to lifelong skills</h2>Some schools also pair the curriculum with other programs to teach road and pedestrian safety and expand access for children with disabilities.For example, Seattle Public Schools also participates in Let’s Go, which serves third, fourth and fifth grades, and includes adaptations for students with additional mobility and cognitive needs. Students in the district also learn how to cross streets, make eye contact with drivers and recognize unsafe behavior. “Traffic gardens” on school playgrounds give students a chance to practice navigating intersections, stop signs, roads and parking areas, giving them skills they can use as pedestrians, <a href="https://apnews.com/article/bike-commuting-tips-safety-hygeine-work-159abea5ad767a4b9c443f506d63e5e0" rel="nofollow">cyclists</a> and eventually drivers.The program can also give children a sense of freedom and independence, Weyer said, while getting them away from screens and into active play.“We want them to be able to have that sense of freedom and independence,” Weyer said. “That’s a life skill. It’s like swimming.”The lessons can stick with students long after the bikes are put away, Raney said.“I have now third graders that are running up and they still remember three years ago, ‘That’s our bike teacher!’" he said. Retractable leashes will not be permitted. These collection events give residents a way to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in homes at no cost.In the Quad Cities, Illinois residents can drop off HHW at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds, 4200 Archer Drive in East Moline on October 10 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.“Illinois residents have benefited from our Household Hazardous Waste collection events since the program’s inception in 1989,”&nbsp;Illinois EPA Director James Jennings. “Through our many partnerships with local governments, nearly 80,000 drums of household chemicals and other hazardous products have been collected and properly disposed of, providing a safer and healthier environment.”Residents are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides and other similar hazardous household products.
