Dispose of hazardous waste at East Moline collection event

The State of Illinois is hosting Fall Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) one-day collection events this year in eight communities throughout the state. These collection events give residents a way to safely dispose of unused or leftover hazardous products commonly found in homes at no cost.
In the Quad Cities, Illinois residents can drop off HHW at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds, 4200 Archer Drive in East Moline on October 10 from 8 a.m. – 3 p.m.
“Illinois residents have benefited from our Household Hazardous Waste collection events since the program’s inception in 1989,” Illinois EPA Director James Jennings. “Through our many partnerships with local governments, nearly 80,000 drums of household chemicals and other hazardous products have been collected and properly disposed of, providing a safer and healthier environment.”
Residents are encouraged to bring chemical cleaners, oil-based paints, thinners, antifreeze, motor oil, gasoline, kerosene, weed killers, insecticides, pesticides and other similar hazardous household products. Fluorescent and other high-intensity discharge lamps may also be brought to the collections. Items not accepted include:
- latex paint,
- explosives,
- propane tanks,
- fire extinguishers,
- smoke detectors,
- agricultural chemicals and
- business wastes.

Illinois EPA has these tips to safely transport household hazardous waste:
- Pack HHW items in a disposable box to avoid spilling during transport.
- Keep similar chemicals together and separate unlike chemicals.
- Secure lids and make sure containers are not leaking.
- Place box(es) in the empty trunk or storage compartment of your vehicle, away from passengers.
- Remain in your vehicle at the collection site.On-site personnel will remove the HHW from your vehicle.

Baby Jane Doe was found abandoned in Washington, D.C., on March 20, 1998. She would now be 28, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). As of today, seven missing children from Washington, D.C. are listed with the NCMEC, and the oldest case dates back to 1961. Notably, not all missing children are reported to the NCMEC, but they should be.

Missing since 1961 from Torrance, California: Karen Lynn Tompkins was only 11 when she was abducted
Karen Lynn Tompkins has been missing from Torrance, California, since August 18, 1961, according to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Her photo above (right) is an age-progressed likeness of how she might have looked at 63, though she would now be 76 if alive.
