The McCurrens will bring their ‘Songs & Stories’ to Rock Island Library

Touring musicians Forrest and Margaret McCurren will bring their "Songs & Stories" show to the Rock Island Public Library Downtown Library, 401 19th St.

The free live performance is from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The pair have played previously at the Rock Island Public Library, where their folksy Americana/country style is always popular. Forrest, on guitar and vocals, is accompanied by wife Margaret on fiddle. Both bring a relaxed vibe with stories and songs of life on the road and at home, performing songs from their latest album "Small Prayers, Big Blessings," as well as previous albums "Oh, Me, Oh My," and "Little Rock."

Every road is a road home for somebody. The McCurrens latest album, “Small Prayers, Big Blessings” captures both road and home. “There’s a rowdiness that comes from the road and then there’s a thoughtfulness when we’re off the road, getting back home and putting in context how much you love your family, wanting to be of service to them, wanting to slow down and be present, more present than when you're out traveling.”

Equally at home quoting Shakespeare and the Bible, Forrest McCurren's songwriting prompted Blake Shelton and Taylor Sheridan to stick him in the lineup to compete in the series “The Road,” which premiered in October 2025.

Their official bio notes they come from the heart of the heartland, where the foothills of the Ozarks meet the Big Muddy, or in other words, the middle of Missouri. McCurren’s songs, which echo singer-songwriter influences from John Prine to Townes Van Zandt, tackle topics ranging from wise words from waitresses, heartbroken high-school football standouts, and tattooed trailer-park lovers. His stories tell tales of love and longing, leaving and regret, nostalgia and hope, and family and friends navigating a world that’s sometimes not quite big enough to hold their dreams.

PAWS New England reports that Sazerac, an 11-week-old male puppy currently in New England, is still waiting for a home after the rest of their litter, and even their mama, were adopted. According to PAWS New England, Sazerac has vision loss in one eye and diminished vision in the other, a condition the rescue says has likely contributed to being overlooked despite otherwise typical puppy behavior.

Returned Through No Fault of His Own, Little Carson Is Still Ready to Be Someone’s Best Friend

Small Dog Rescue of New England reports that Carson, a small dog currently in New England, is once again available for adoption after a recent placement did not work out due to tension with another dog in the home. "He was adopted but the dog in his new home didn't want a new friend coming in so the best thing for Carson is to find him a different home," they explain. According to the nonprofit volunteer organization, returning Carson to the rescue was the best option so he can be matched with a more suitable, long-term household.
