Muscatine residents sought for boards, commissions

The City of Muscatine invites residents to apply for openings on several boards and commissions, including three that play a central role in shaping development, land use, and recreation in the community:
- Planning & Zoning Commission reviews proposed subdivisions, rezoning requests, and the sale of public property; makes recommendations concerning the growth of the city; and assists in formulating the City’s five‑year Capital Improvement Plan.
- Zoning Board of Adjustment hears and decides appeals involving alleged errors in zoning enforcement or interpretation, and considers special exceptions to the zoning ordinance.
- The Historic Preservation Commission works to safeguard Muscatine’s historic, aesthetic, and cultural heritage. Commissioners assist in identifying, evaluating, and preserving properties of historical significance and help ensure that Muscatine’s architectural legacy is protected for future generations.
Muscatine has 12 boards and commissions in total, each contributing to the community’s quality of life — from parks and public art to zoning, development, and historic preservation. Details on each board, qualifications, and the application form are available at BOARDS.
Application Process
Residents interested in serving are encouraged to submit an application by Friday, Oct. 30. Applications may be submitted by email or mail: Boards & Commissions, c/o City Clerk, Muscatine City Hall, 215 Sycamore St., Muscatine, IA 52761.
Applications remain on file for future opportunities, so residents are encouraged to apply even if current openings are not an exact match.
Selection procedure
All applications are reviewed by the Nominating Committee — consisting of the mayor, two city council members, and the city administrator or a designated staff member — to ensure applicants meet qualifications and avoid conflicts of interest. Qualified candidates are forwarded to the city council for appointment.
