Illinois residents can dispose of household waste safely this weekend at a collection event at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds.
Sarah Bambas from the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency joins Our Quad Cities Hami Arain to discuss the event.
What is the Rock Island County Waste Management Agency?
Rock Island County Waste Management Agency, also known as RICWMA, is a municipal joint action agency serving thirteen governments in Rock Island County. We assist and coordinate members in solid waste management.
What solid waste management services do you provide?
RICWMA partners with many agencies to provide free services like used tire pick up, appliance pick up, recycling drop off, electronics recycling, and household hazardous waste disposal. We also recently launched Recycle Coach which allows all Rock Island County residents to search for the items they want to dispose of and find what the best options are.
The household hazardous waste collection event will be Saturday, Oct. 10
Yes, we are co-hosting with IL EPA a Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event this Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Rock Island County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. A contractor will collect all Illinois residents' household hazardous waste for free at this event.
What is household hazardous waste?
Household Hazardous Waste, also known as HHW, is damaging, flammable, and hazardous chemicals found in homes and garages. These items require special disposal since they can become toxic to the environment if not disposed of correctly. Some examples of HHW include oil-based paint, cleaning products, used motor oil, and gasoline.
How can a resident sign up for the event?
Residents can visit here and click on the "sign up here" button, which will direct them to a sign-up page. The Rock Island County website also lists what items will be accepted at the event.
