The One Crispy Apple I'm Choosing Over Honeycrisp Right Now
Learn about an apple variety that is super crisp and firm that I am getting at apple orchards over Honeycrisp this month. It took a long time from when the Crimson Crisp apple was first bred until it was available to be grown commercially. It was first developed in the 1970s by the PRI (Purdue, Rutgers, and Illnois) co-operative. It wasn't until 2006 that the apple was released for growers. That is a long time in the development process. You don't get rich quick by developing a new apple variety!

How an Unexpected Yellow Apple Came From a Gala Apple Tree and Became a New Orchard Favorite
Learn about an apple variety that was discovered as a natural mutation on a Gala apple tree and how it became a variety that is now grown all across the country. This apple was discovered by Tom and Bob McLaughlin of Portsmouth, Ohio. No genetically modified apple here. The apple arose from a natural mutation that came from a Gala apple tree. It was discovered around the year 2000. It is great to see even with modern apple breeding techniques that we will still gets these chance occurrences that happen in one orchard and then it gets shared with so many people. Thanks to the McLaughlins for sharing this variety with the world!
