Tropical Storm Rachel Expected to Impact Southern California and Surrounding States | Complex Setup

Once again, the setup remains to be very complex, so it is no surprise that the track remains difficult to pin down with now almost two areas of shift possible. A cutoff low, an upper level trough, and what remains of Rachel all have to interact, with their timing and positioning playing a major role in how this unfolds. Even small changes could shift where the deepest moisture moves, where the lifting mechanism is, where thunderstorms develop, and which areas receive the heaviest rainfall. That is why individual model runs can show noticeably different outcomes. Confidence should improve as these features evolve, but the exact track and rainfall totals still have room to change still.

The One Crispy Apple I'm Choosing Over Honeycrisp Right Now

Learn about an apple variety that is super crisp and firm that I am getting at apple orchards over Honeycrisp this month. It took a long time from when the Crimson Crisp apple was first bred until it was available to be grown commercially. It was first developed in the 1970s by the PRI (Purdue, Rutgers, and Illnois) co-operative. It wasn't until 2006 that the apple was released for growers. That is a long time in the development process. You don't get rich quick by developing a new apple variety!

This Custard Pie Magically Forms Its Own Crust

Magic crust custard pie earns its name by accomplishing something that feels almost impossible: a simple batter separates as it bakes, creating a delicate crust and creamy custard center without rolling or fitting pastry dough. The top becomes lightly golden while the inside stays soft, smooth, and gently sweet. Nutmeg or vanilla gives the filling its familiar old-fashioned aroma, and the thin crust provides just enough structure to hold a clean slice. It is an ideal dessert for anyone who loves homemade pie but would happily skip the most intimidating part of preparing one.

Lining Your Oven With Foil Could Cost You Your Life, Experts Warn

A sheet of aluminum foil on the oven floor might seem like an easy way to catch bubbling cheese, pie filling and other spills. But appliance manufacturers warn that this cleanup shortcut can create a fire hazard -- and, in a gas oven, a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Dolly Parton’s Five-Ingredient Casserole Is Southern Simplicity

Dolly Parton’s five-ingredient casserole proves that comfort food does not need a complicated shopping list. A handful of familiar ingredients layer together and bake into a warm, filling meal with tender vegetables and hearty flavor in every serving. Because the preparation is straightforward, the casserole feels like something that could have been assembled in a country kitchen before everyone gathered around the table. It is unpretentious, practical, and built to feed people rather than impress them with unnecessary fuss.

Mississippi Mud Potatoes Are the Side Dish Everyone Devours

Mississippi Mud Potatoes coat tender diced potatoes in a creamy mixture of cheddar, cream cheese, and sour cream. As the casserole bakes, the sauce melts around every potato and the top develops bubbling, golden patches. Bacon can bring smoky crunch, while onions or green onions add savory freshness. The finished dish is rich, cheesy, and substantial enough to challenge the main course for attention.

This is the first cake gone at every Southern potluck table

There's a reason this cake never makes it home from a potluck. Someone always asks for the recipe before the plate is even empty. This isn't a dressed-up cake mix. It's a true from-scratch Southern pound cake, dense and buttery, with chopped pecans folded right into the batter so every slice gets that nutty crunch instead of just a sprinkle on top.

Red Velvet Cheesecake Bundt Cake Hides a Creamy Surprise Beneath Deep Crimson Cake and Cream Cheese

This Red Velvet Cheesecake Bundt Cake takes an already dramatic dessert and gives it an irresistible creamy center. Slice into the cake and the hidden cheesecake filling is the real showstopper, creating beautiful layers that make this dessert look far more elaborate than an ordinary Bundt cake.

Old-Fashioned Tea Cakes Bring Back a Beloved Southern Tradition

Soft, buttery, and gently sweet, these old-fashioned tea cakes fall somewhere between a tender sugar cookie and a pillowy biscuit. Butter and sugar are creamed until light, then enriched with eggs and vanilla before flour, baking powder, and salt form the uncomplicated dough. They bake quickly, developing lightly golden edges while remaining pale and soft through the center. The flavor is simple in the best possible way, carrying the sort of homemade warmth that makes an heirloom recipe feel instantly familiar even when you are trying it for the first time.
