Tropical Storm Rachel Expected to Impact Southern California and Surrounding States | Complex Setup

Once again, the setup remains to be very complex, so it is no surprise that the track remains difficult to pin down with now almost two areas of shift possible. A cutoff low, an upper level trough, and what remains of Rachel all have to interact, with their timing and positioning playing a major role in how this unfolds. Even small changes could shift where the deepest moisture moves, where the lifting mechanism is, where thunderstorms develop, and which areas receive the heaviest rainfall. That is why individual model runs can show noticeably different outcomes. Confidence should improve as these features evolve, but the exact track and rainfall totals still have room to change still.

I Remember These Disappearing Before the Real Food Came Out

Some party foods don’t need fancy bread, tiny skewers, or a complicated presentation to empty the tray. Ritz Party Sandwiches have that old-school snack-table magic: buttery, crisp crackers turned into little savory sandwiches that are just the right size to grab while walking past. They’re crunchy, rich, salty, and dangerously easy to eat because one never feels like enough to count. Put out a plate before everyone arrives and you may find yourself “testing” several before the doorbell even rings. There’s a reason simple little appetizers like this survived so many family parties.

Lining Your Oven With Foil Could Cost You Your Life, Experts Warn

A sheet of aluminum foil on the oven floor might seem like an easy way to catch bubbling cheese, pie filling and other spills. But appliance manufacturers warn that this cleanup shortcut can create a fire hazard -- and, in a gas oven, a risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.

I Was Skeptical Until I Cut the First Slice

Chicken meatloaf sounds like the sensible choice right up until garlic and Parmesan get involved. Then things change fast. This version bakes into a juicy, savory loaf with a golden exterior and plenty of cheesy, garlicky flavor running through every slice. It has the comfort of the meatloaf you grew up with, but without feeling like you’ve eaten the same dinner a hundred times. And that first warm slice? That’s the moment the ground chicken starts making a lot more sense.

The Homemade Candy I’d Hide Before the Family Finds the Container

There’s a reason turtle candy disappears so quickly once somebody sets out a plate. You get buttery pecans underneath, gooey caramel settling into all those little spaces, and a layer of chocolate bringing the whole thing together. Every bite moves from crunchy to chewy to melty, with just enough saltiness from the nuts to keep all that sweetness interesting. They look like the sort of candy you’d pick from behind a glass counter, but the combination itself is wonderfully straightforward. Pecans, caramel, and chocolate were doing “sweet and salty” long before anyone needed a trendy name for it.

The Cookie Jar Favorite That Deserves a Comeback

Butterscotch used to show up everywhere—pudding cups, hard candies, church-supper desserts, and cookie tins—and these soft chewies are a good reminder of why. They bake up with tender centers, lightly golden edges, and pockets of butterscotch chips that turn melty and almost caramel-like while they’re warm. That deep brown-sugar flavor makes them taste a little more old-fashioned than the usual chocolate chip cookie, in the best possible way. Pour a glass of milk or make some coffee and suddenly you’ve got the kind of simple homemade treat that feels like it could have come straight from a well-used family recipe box.

Southern Hoecakes Bring Crispy Cornmeal Comfort to the Skillet

Southern hoecakes transform a short list of cornmeal-based ingredients into thin, golden rounds with crisp edges and warm, tender centers. Cooking them directly in a skillet gives every cake the browned surface that separates them from oven-baked cornbread. Their flavor is simple and comforting, which allows them to work equally well with savory meals and sweet breakfast toppings. Fresh from the pan, they have the rustic texture that makes traditional recipes endure.

The One Crispy Apple I'm Choosing Over Honeycrisp Right Now

Learn about an apple variety that is super crisp and firm that I am getting at apple orchards over Honeycrisp this month. It took a long time from when the Crimson Crisp apple was first bred until it was available to be grown commercially. It was first developed in the 1970s by the PRI (Purdue, Rutgers, and Illnois) co-operative. It wasn't until 2006 that the apple was released for growers. That is a long time in the development process. You don't get rich quick by developing a new apple variety!

This Custard Pie Magically Forms Its Own Crust

Magic crust custard pie earns its name by accomplishing something that feels almost impossible: a simple batter separates as it bakes, creating a delicate crust and creamy custard center without rolling or fitting pastry dough. The top becomes lightly golden while the inside stays soft, smooth, and gently sweet. Nutmeg or vanilla gives the filling its familiar old-fashioned aroma, and the thin crust provides just enough structure to hold a clean slice. It is an ideal dessert for anyone who loves homemade pie but would happily skip the most intimidating part of preparing one.
