QC governments work to create temporary winter emergency shelter

Local governments in the Quad Cities are teaming up to help unsheltered people this winter.

Rock Island County, the Cities of Moline, Rock Island, East Moline and Silvis and the Village of Milan are working with local nonprofit organizations to establish a temporary winter emergency shelter in Moline for people experiencing homelessness. A potential location has been identified and partners are finalizing agreements, facility preparations and operational plans. The shelter will provide additional emergency shelter capacity during the winter.

"This temporary emergency shelter is a first step," said Rock Island County Board Chairman Richard "Quijas" Brunk."Since May, local governments throughout Rock Island County have been working together and remain committed to collaborating with our agency partners on long-term solutions that address not only the need for shelter and housing, but also the underlying causes of homelessness. It's not only good for our communities, it's the right thing to do.”

The temporary shelter will supplement existing services provided by organizations like Christian Care, Humility Homes & Services, Project NOW and Third Place. Community partners are expected to help with meals, transportation, case management and other supportive services. The regional partners are working toward creating a permanent homeless shelter and resource center on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River.

The location of the shelter, its expected opening date, available services and opportunities for community involvement will be announced as the plans are finalized.
