Ohio food pantries struggle under surge as federal aid halts amid government shutdown

Food pantries across Ohio are seeing record demand as the federal government shutdown disrupts food assistance programs. Near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, the Fairborn Fish Food Pantry has doubled its weekly caseload, serving up to 500 families. In Columbus, the NNEMAP Food Pantry reported its busiest day on record, feeding nearly 285 people in one day.

The surge comes as millions of residents face delays in November’s SNAP benefits and other federal aid programs. With funding halted, many food banks are struggling to keep shelves stocked, even as donations rise. Local organizations warn that without restored federal support, the crisis could deepen in the coming weeks.

A Salmonella Recall Now Reaches Walmart, Target, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods

A widening food recall connected to a multistate Salmonella outbreak now covers dips, salsas, guacamole and prepared meals sold by some of America's largest grocery chains. Taylor Fresh Foods announced the voluntary recall on Aug. 9 after learning that jalapeno supplier Coast Citrus Distributors was recalling peppers because of possible Salmonella contamination. The affected jalapenos came from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, identified as the likely source of an ongoing outbreak.

One of my favorite grapes of the year is now arriving in stores. Here is what you should know about Tear Drops grapes. Tear Drops are a unique seedless green grape, that have a more elongated shape, than being round. They were introduced in 2020 by Grapery, out of California. Originally there was another variety called Tear Drops that were a red grape. They were originally called Witch Fingers grapes. But they were discontinued because they proved difficult to grow. Now the green grapes are the only variety in Grapery's Tear Drops line.
