Nearly 150,000 Collin County Residents Face Food Insecurity, New Data Shows

Collin County may be one of the fastest-growing parts of the country, but new data shows that growth has not erased a persistent problem: food insecurity. Nearly 150,000 Collin County residents were estimated to experience food insecurity in 2024, according to Feeding America’s latest Map the Meal Gap study. The county’s overall food insecurity rate was 12.9%, down slightly from 13.5% the previous year. The numbers look different when it comes to children. An estimated 53,040 children in Collin County faced food insecurity in 2024, representing 18.4% of children. That is up sharply from 43,770 children and a 15.6% rate in 2023. In other words, while the overall number of food-insecure residents dipped slightly, the number of children struggling to consistently access enough food jumped by more than 9,000 in a single year. Part Of A Larger North Texas Problem The new figures come as food insecurity continues to rise across the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Across the 25 counties served by the North Texas Food Bank and Tarrant Area Food Bank, an estimated 1.4 million people experienced food insecurity in 2024. The freshest grapes in the grocery store are going to be ones where the stem is still green and is flexible. As the grapes age, the stem will lose its color and turn dark brown or black and become rigid. While the grapes may look and taste great, they won't last very long at that point so if you do buy them, eat them up quickly.

A Salmonella Recall Now Reaches Walmart, Target, Trader Joe's and Whole Foods

A widening food recall connected to a multistate Salmonella outbreak now covers dips, salsas, guacamole and prepared meals sold by some of America's largest grocery chains. Taylor Fresh Foods announced the voluntary recall on Aug. 9 after learning that jalapeno supplier Coast Citrus Distributors was recalling peppers because of possible Salmonella contamination. The affected jalapenos came from a grower in Sinaloa, Mexico, identified as the likely source of an ongoing outbreak.

One of my favorite grapes of the year is now arriving in stores. Here is what you should know about Tear Drops grapes. Tear Drops are a unique seedless green grape, that have a more elongated shape, than being round. They were introduced in 2020 by Grapery, out of California. Originally there was another variety called Tear Drops that were a red grape. They were originally called Witch Fingers grapes. But they were discontinued because they proved difficult to grow. Now the green grapes are the only variety in Grapery's Tear Drops line.
